A Coach in Your Corner: Working with a Cannabis Professional
The world of cannabis can be complicated, confusing, and overwhelming, but you do not need to go it alone. An emerging specialty in the industry is the cannabis professional - someone trained and certified in the use of medical cannabis as a cannabis coach and/or cannabis consultant/educator. A cannabis professional can help you figure out which products to use and how to use them effectively and responsibly.

There are three main types of people who seek cannabis for medicinal purposes:
People who have a disease or condition of a mental or physical nature with symptoms that are not managed by traditional pharmaceuticals or other therapies.
People whose disease or condition is generally managed well with traditional pharmaceuticals or other therapies but they do not like the side-effects.
People who prefer to use something natural as opposed to synthetic or who desire to use something with a lower risk of abuse or addiction. They want to get off of, or stay away from, "the hard stuff".
Sometimes people are looking to add cannabis to their healthcare management in the hopes they can reduce the amount of medications they take or improve the results they are getting, and sometimes they are looking to replace whatever they are currently using with something different. Whatever the reason, cannabis can often help.
Realizing and embracing the idea that medicinal cannabis can help you, and knowing what to do with it, are completely different things. Trying to figure it out on your own can be challenging and costly, which is why a cannabis professional can be an invaluable asset so you don't have to jump blindly into cannabis use.
A cannabis professional...
1. Is well-trained, experienced, and certified in the use of cannabis.
2. Advocates for responsible use of the cannabis plant and its many benefits.
3. Educates clients around cannabis, health, and habit change.
4. Provides support to their clients as they make positive changes in their life.
5. Helps clients track what is and is not working so they can reach their health goals.
6. Provides a safe and non-judgmental space to ask questions and discuss concerns and fears.
Why should you work with a cannabis professional?
You certainly do not NEED to work with a cannabis professional, but you will be happy if you choose to.
As with pretty much everything, you can find most of the information you want on the internet. The problem is, when it comes to cannabis, the forums and websites you will find will, for the most part, lean towards the joys of getting stoned recreationally, not how to properly use cannabis for its health benefits. Discussions on medical marijuana tend to be either too vague to be of much help or too complicated and confusing to be able to do anything with. Doctors tend not to be trained on cannabis, friends and family can speak from experience but not necessarily guide you in the right direction for your personal needs, and budtenders are not legally able to offer medical guidance. This can leave people not knowing where to turn.
A cannabis professional can be your best bud!
Some of the reasons people hire a cannabis professional are:
to save themselves time over doing all of the work themselves
they need help and accountability reaching their health goals to avoid costly mistakes
because they want someone to help take the stress out of the process
they see value in tapping into someone else's experience and expertise
they tried it on their own and became overwhelmed or confused
Figuring out the proper cannabis routine for your unique body needs takes time. It is both an art and a science to find that sweet spot between getting the relief you want while still being able to function. While people whose sole goal is to get high for fun can often get away with smoking whatever they want simply by choosing a Sativa or Indica then deciding whether they liked the effects or not, using cannabis for its therapeutic properties is significantly more complicated. It requires a lot of experimentation with doses, cultivars, chemovars, timing, and delivery methods. It takes education as well as a great deal of trial and error, but the time and effort will be worth it and may change your life.
