Disclaimer: Psilocybin is still illegal in many places. In Canada, psilocybin is a controlled substance and cannot be grown or possessed unless authorized by Health Canada This blog is for information purposes only, and is intended for individuals with legal access to psilocybin who have access through a medical prescription.
What is Psilocybin?
Psilocybin is a psychoactive compound that belongs to a class of drugs known as hallucinogens. It is found in various species of mushrooms, commonly referred to as "magic mushrooms" or "shrooms." When ingested, psilocybin is converted into psilocin, which interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered perception, mood changes, and visual hallucinations.
Risks and Benefits of Psilocybin
Like any psychoactive substance, psilocybin carries both risks and potential benefits. It is important to note that the use of psilocybin should be approached with caution and under appropriate guidance.
Risks of Psilocybin:
1. Bad Trips: Psilocybin can induce intense psychological experiences, and in some cases, individuals may experience anxiety, paranoia, or confusion during a "bad trip." These negative experiences can be distressing and may have long-lasting effects on mental well-being.
2. Flashbacks: Some individuals may experience flashbacks or prolonged perceptual disturbances even after the effects of psilocybin have worn off.
3. Psychological Vulnerability: People with a history of mental health issues, such as psychosis or schizophrenia, may be at a higher risk of adverse psychological reactions to psilocybin.
Potential Benefits of Psilocybin:
1. Therapeutic Potential: Psilocybin has shown promise in the treatment of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and addiction. Research suggests that it may help individuals gain new perspectives, enhance emotional well-being, and promote personal growth.
2. Spiritual and Mystical Experiences: Many individuals report profound spiritual or mystical experiences while under the influence of psilocybin. These experiences may lead to increased feelings of interconnectedness, awe, and a sense of meaning and purpose in life.
3. Creativity and Problem-Solving: Some users claim that psilocybin enhances creativity and problem-solving abilities, leading to new insights and perspectives.
4. Pain Management: Research suggests that psilocybin can help alleviate various types of pain, including chronic pain conditions and phantom limb pain. It is believed that psilocybin interacts with receptors in the brain, particularly serotonin receptors, which play a crucial role in pain perception and regulation. By stimulating these receptors, psilocybin may reduce the sensation of pain and increase pain tolerance. Moreover, psilocybin has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties, which further aids in pain relief. Additionally, psilocybin may also help to modulate neural pathways involved in pain perception, leading to long-lasting relief.
Paradoxically, psilocybin has been found to possess both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties. When consumed, psilocybin interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered perceptions and heightened sensory experiences. At the same time, it also stimulates the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are molecules that promote inflammation in the body. This inflammatory response can be beneficial in certain cases, such as providing a defense mechanism against pathogens or aiding in tissue repair. However, psilocybin also exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by modulating the activity of immune cells and reducing the production of pro-inflammatory substances. This dual nature of psilocybin's effects on inflammation highlights its complex interactions within the immune system and the potential for therapeutic applications in conditions characterized by dysregulated immune responses.
So, why are we talking about psilocybin in a cannabis blog?
As interest grows in the therapeutic use of psilocybin as a treatment for a variety of physical and mental health issues, it is natural for cannabis users to consider adding psilocybin to our healthcare routine. After all, through our use of cannabis we have seen first-hand evidence of the power of plant medicine. Given that some companies are even combining the ingredients of psilocybin and cannabis in one product, it is important to understand the risks and benefits of taking combination products, or even just using both plants separately but on a regular basis.
The combination of psilocybin with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) or CBD (cannabidiol) is an area that requires careful consideration. While research on this specific combination is limited, it is important to be aware of potential interactions and effects.
1. Psilocybin and THC:
Combining psilocybin with THC, the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, may intensify the effects of both substances. This combination can lead to increased sensory perception, altered thought patterns, and potentially stronger hallucinatory experiences. It is advisable to approach this combination with caution and start with lower doses of both substances.
Combining psilocybin with THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, can have both positive and negative effects. On the positive side, this combination may enhance the therapeutic benefits of psilocybin while reducing anxiety and potential negative psychological effects (THC can have a calming effect and can help alleviate the anxiety that some individuals may experience during a psilocybin trip, provided a suitable strain is used and it is used in low doses and only by users who are not sensitive to the effects of THC, as THC can, itself, increase anxiety and paranoia in some people). It may also enhance the overall psychedelic experience, leading to deeper introspection and spiritual insights.
However, there are also potential downsides to consider. Combining these substances can increase the intensity of the psychedelic effects, which may be overwhelming for some individuals, leading to a higher risk of experiencing a bad trip. Moreover, the interaction between psilocybin and THC is not yet fully understood, and the long-term effects of this combination on mental health and cognitive function remain uncertain. Therefore, caution should be exercised when combining these two substances, and it is advisable to seek guidance from a qualified professional.
2. Psilocybin and CBD:
Research suggests that CBD, a non-psychoactive component of cannabis, may have potential therapeutic effects and may help mitigate some of the anxiety or paranoia associated with psilocybin use. However, more research is needed to fully understand the interactions between psilocybin and CBD.
Combining psilocybin with CBD has gained significant attention in recent years, warranting a thorough discussion of its pros and cons. On the positive side, the synergy between these two compounds can potentially enhance the therapeutic effects of psilocybin. CBD has been recognized for its anxiolytic and anti-inflammatory properties, which might help reduce the anxiety and potential inflammation associated with psilocybin use. Additionally, CBD's neuroprotective qualities can also offset any neurotoxicity that might arise from psilocybin. However, it is crucial to consider the potential drawbacks as well. Combining these substances can lead to a stronger and more unpredictable psychoactive experience, making it unsuitable for individuals with a history of mental health disorders or those prone to adverse reactions. Moreover, the lack of comprehensive research on this combination poses certain risks and uncertainties. Therefore, it is essential for further scientific investigation and caution before endorsing or utilizing this combination.
How to Use Psilocybin and Cannabis
If you plan to use Psilocybin at all, please read this blog first: Preparing For Your Psilocybin Experience.
If you plan to use psilocybin with cannabis, you should keep the following in mind:
1. Set and setting are important for both cannabis and psilocybin, so when combining them it is even more important.
2. Keep your amount of THC cannabis low (2-5mg), opting for CBD-dominant strains instead.
3. Make sure you have tried cannabis and psilocybin separately and know they are both well-tolerated before combining them.
4. Keep your amount of psilocybin low. See notes on MICRODOSING below.
5. Avoid using cannabis strains that are known to promote anxiety and paranoia.
6. Avoid using cannabis and psilocybin at the same time if you find the effects unpleasant. For example, one recommendation is that with psilocybin you dose for 4 days then take 3 days off. You could use your cannabis on the days you aren't using your psilocybin. Or, take one during the day and one during the evening, leaving time between for much of one drug to leave your system before you take the other.
7. Know the risks and contraindications of each. Combining them could intensify the side-effects more than one of them on its own. If you have any significant medical conditions, you need to be extremely careful about combining them, especially if THC is being used.
Microdosing
Microdosing refers to the practice of consuming sub-perceptual doses of psychedelics, such as psilocybin, on a regular basis. Unlike a full dose, which produces noticeable psychedelic effects, microdoses are typically one-tenth to one-twentieth of a standard dose, intended to be below the threshold of perception.
Psilocybin dosing for microdosing purposes typically follows a schedule of 4 days on and 3 days off. During the 4 days on, a small amount of psilocybin is taken each day, referred to as a microdose. A microdose is usually around 0.1 to 0.3 grams of dried psilocybin mushrooms. This dosage is considered sub-perceptual, meaning it is unlikely to produce any significant hallucinogenic effects. The purpose of microdosing is to experience the potential cognitive and emotional benefits of psilocybin without the intense psychedelic experience typically associated with higher doses. It is important to note that everyone's response to psilocybin may vary, so individual experimentation and finding a dosage that works best for personal needs and goals is recommended.
Why is Microdosing Psilocybin Safer?
Microdosing psilocybin is considered safer compared to taking a full dose for several reasons:
1. Reduced Intensity of Effects:
Microdoses are administered at levels below the threshold for perceptual changes or hallucinations. This means that the user is less likely to experience overwhelming psychological effects, reducing the risk of a challenging or distressing experience.
2. Lower Risk of Acute Adverse Reactions:
Microdosing minimizes the risk of acute adverse reactions such as anxiety, paranoia, or confusion, which can occur at higher doses. The sub-perceptual nature of microdosing allows individuals to function normally in their daily lives without interference from intense psychedelic effects.
3. Easier Integration into Daily Routine:
Microdosing involves taking small doses on a regular basis, typically every few days. This allows for easier integration into one's daily routine and reduces the need for dedicated preparation or a controlled environment.
4. Gradual Exploration of Effects:
By starting with microdoses, individuals can gradually explore the effects of psilocybin and assess their personal response before considering higher doses. This cautious approach allows for a better understanding of individual sensitivity and tolerance to psilocybin.
Conclusion
Psilocybin, with its potential risks and benefits, has captured the attention of researchers, therapists, and individuals seeking alternative approaches to mental health and personal growth. Microdosing psilocybin offers a safer way to explore the potential benefits of this compound, allowing individuals to experience subtle effects while minimizing the risk of overwhelming psychological experiences.
When considering the combination of psilocybin with THC or CBD, it is crucial to exercise caution and seek expert advice to ensure a safe and informed approach. As with any psychoactive substance, responsible use and proper guidance are essential for maximizing potential benefits and minimizing potential risks.
It is important to note that combining substances can have unpredictable effects, and individual responses may vary. It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or a knowledgeable expert before combining psilocybin with other substances.
Remember, always prioritize your safety and well-being when embarking on any psychedelic journey.
