Disclaimer: Psilocybin is still illegal in many places. In Canada, psilocybin is a controlled substance and cannot be grown or possessed unless authorized by Health Canada This blog is for information purposes only, and is intended for individuals with legal access to psilocybin who have access through a medical prescription.

Having a good psilocybin trip can be an enlightening and transformative experience, but it is important to take certain precautions.
Top 10 Ways to Prepare
1. Educate Yourself
Before embarking on a psilocybin journey, it is crucial to educate yourself about the substance, its effects, and potential risks. Read books, scientific articles, and reliable online resources to gain a comprehensive understanding of psilocybin and its impact on the mind and body.
Understanding the history, cultural significance, and scientific research surrounding psilocybin will provide you with a solid foundation to approach the experience with respect and knowledge.
It is also important to educate yourself on any medications you are taking or any health conditions you have that may be contraindicated with psilocybin use. Since you are likely here because your doctor or mental health professional has prescribed psilocybin, they may not know your full health history, so do your diligence in considering safety.
Psilocybin may have potential therapeutic uses. However, it is important to be aware of medications and medical conditions that are contraindicated for its use. Individuals who are taking medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, or medications that affect serotonin levels should avoid using psilocybin, as it can interact with these medications and lead to adverse effects. Additionally, individuals with a history of certain medical conditions, such as psychosis, bipolar disorder, or a family history of schizophrenia, should avoid using psilocybin due to the potential risk of exacerbating these conditions.
Additionally, people with certain heart conditions, such as uncontrolled hypertension or a history of heart attacks, may be advised against using psilocybin due to its potential effects on heart rate and blood pressure. Individuals with a history of seizures or epilepsy should exercise caution, as psilocybin may lower the seizure threshold. Furthermore, individuals with liver or kidney diseases may need to be vigilant as psilocybin is metabolized by these organs. It is crucial that individuals consult with their healthcare professionals to ensure they are well-informed about potential risks and benefits before considering the use of psilocybin for therapeutic purposes.
2. Set and Setting
Before embarking on a psilocybin journey, it is crucial to carefully consider your set and setting. Set refers to your mindset, emotional state, and intentions, while setting refers to the physical environment in which you will be tripping. Creating a safe, comfortable, and familiar space can help minimize the chances of a challenging experience, and creating a supportive environment is crucial for a positive psilocybin experience.
Find a quiet space where you can relax and feel secure. Consider factors such as lighting, temperature, and noise level to ensure a conducive atmosphere. Dim the lights, play soothing music, and surround yourself with familiar and comforting objects. This can help to create a sense of calm and stability, allowing you to retain control over your experience. It is best to avoid using psilocybin in a party environment or anywhere that is loud, crowded, or over-stimulating, or in the presence of strangers.
It is often recommended to use the "Buddy System" and have a 'sitter' present during your experience. A sitter is a trusted friend or family member who remains sober and can help you if you start to experience any unwanted effects. Having a familiar and supportive presence can help create a safe and comfortable environment. This is most crucial during your first experience, since you don't know how you will react; any time you try new products or strains, as you are likely to respond differently with different types; as as well as any time you are taking doses stronger than microdosing.
Additionally, set an intention for your journey. Reflect on what you hope to gain from the experience, whether it's personal insights, emotional healing, or spiritual connection. Setting a clear intention can guide your experience and provide a sense of purpose.
3. Choose the Right Product
Like cannabis, gone are the days where you pretty much had one choice. With cannabis, it has traditionally been smoking dried flower. With psilocybin, it has been eating fresh or dried mushrooms. These days, psilocybin can be found in many different products from capsules and tinctures to beverages, chocolate bars, and gummies.
As with cannabis, I often encourage newcomers to start with pre-dosed capsules, as they are the most consistently dosed and precise products. Dried mushrooms are usually dosed by weight, but can be more unpredictable in strength than capsules, and while gummies, teas, and chocolate bars may be a tasty option, quite often there can be inconsistency in dosage, even from one gummy to the next in the same bag. Until you know how you will react and your body adapts, stick with capsules. And remember, there is a difference between strains as well. For example, Penis Envy has harder-hitting hallucinatory effects than Golden Teacher, as the Penis Envy strain has higher levels of psilocybin. Research the strains to see the benefits of each and determine which is right for your particular desired outcome.
Another important aspect of choosing the right product is ensuring you are purchasing quality products. Due to it being a controlled substance, there is little oversight when it comes to things like quality control and safety. You want to ensure you are only consuming products that are responsibly grown with health and safety being prioritized over profits, with independent lab testing and quality assurance. Get recommendations from your healthcare provider and research sellers' reputations before making any purchase.
4. Choose the Right Dose
Determining the appropriate dose of psilocybin is essential for a comfortable and meaningful experience. Start with a low to moderate dose, especially if you are new to psychedelics. This allows you to familiarize yourself with the effects and gauge your sensitivity.
It is important to note that dosing dried and fresh mushrooms is NOT the same as dosing edibles. It is therefore important to know whether the dose you are looking at is the weight of mushrooms you are expected to consume to reach a particular effect, whether they are talking about fresh or dried mushrooms, or whether it is the amount of psilocybin in the product. Depending on the strain, there can be anywhere from 5-20mg of psilocybin in 1 gram of dried mushrooms.
A general guide is:
Micro-dose (medicinal): .1 to .5 grams of dried mushrooms, which contains 1-5mg of psilocybin.
a standard dose for therapeutic treatments; subtle, imperceptible changes to mood and perception; no psychedelic effects/hallucinations
Mini-dose: .5-1 gram of dried mushrooms, which contains 5-10mg of psilocybin.
at .5 grams, effects will be similar but more pronounced than a micro-dose, and at 1 gram will closer in effect to a low dose, but at the milder end; a good second step for those who are not seeing sufficient results with micro-dosing must still want to keep the dose as low as possible
Low/Standard Dose: 1-2 gram of dried mushrooms, which contains approximately 10-20mg of psilocybin.
mild euphoria, enhancement of all senses, little to no visual effects and no loss of touch with reality, though some people may experience mild auras or see strange patterns; altered mood with a range of emotions, increased enjoyment, introspection, may be difficult to focus
Moderate/Therapeutic Dose: 2-3.5 grams of dried mushrooms, which contains approximately 20-35mg of psilocybin.
similar effects from low/standard dosing only intensified, moderate level of altered perception of time and space, stronger euphoria, changes to emotion and mood with a more profound emotional experience, some hallucinogenic effects with more powerful visualizations, reflective thoughts
High Dose: 3.5-5 grams of dried mushrooms, which contains approximately 35-50mg of psilocybin.
intense psychedelic effects, blending of the senses, hallucinations, mind-blowing visual and sensory distortions, profound introspection and insights
Mega Dose (Ultra-High): 5 grams or more of dried mushrooms, which contains 50mg or more of psilocybin.
sometimes called a 'heroic dose', similar effects to high dosing, but more extreme with more profound effects; can result in deep fear and anxiety, intense emotions, traumatic memories, and losing touch with reality
**Mega Dosing is NOT recommended due to the extreme side effects, including complete loss of control and severe sensory distortion; if used at all, it should only be done in a therapeutic setting with oversight from a professional mental healthcare provider trained in the use of psychedelics for severe trauma and mental health conditions
Consulting with an experienced guide or therapist can help you determine the right dose based on your individual needs and goals. They can provide personalized guidance and support throughout your journey.
5. Prepare Mentally, Emotionally, and Physically
Preparing yourself mentally and emotionally is crucial for a successful psilocybin experience. Good or bad, one of the aspects of psilocybin is that it amplifies your current state of mind. That is great if you are in a good place, but if you are already highly anxious or deeply depressed, using psilocybin, especially in large quantities, can make things worse. Reflect on your current state of mind and emotional well-being.
Address any unresolved issues or underlying emotional or mental issues before embarking on the journey to ensure that you are in a positive frame of mind and in a stable and balanced state before embarking on the journey.
Practice mindfulness, meditation, or journaling to cultivate a sense of inner calm and clarity. This can help you navigate any challenging emotions or thoughts that may arise during the experience.
One of the most common unwanted side effects of psilocybin is nausea. This can be caused by both its affect on the stomach, as well as from the resulting dizziness that can occur. Nausea can be exacerbated if taking psilocybin with alcohol and other drugs. While it is recommended to take psilocybin on an empty stomach for the most intense effects and best absorption, doing so also increases the risk of experiencing nausea.
To help avoid or treat nausea:
a. Eat a meal before taking psilocybin, but opt for lighter meal that is easy to digest, which would be something high in carbs and low in fat. A greasy cheeseburger is not you best option.
b. Take some ginger with the psilocybin.
c. Have some Pepto or other anti-nauseant on hand.
d. Take your psilocybin an hour or two after eating.
It is also important to stay hydrated, so have lots of water available to drink before, during, and after your trip.
6. Follow a Healthy Lifestyle
Prioritize your physical well-being in the days leading up to your psilocybin experience. Maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. Avoid substances such as alcohol and caffeine, as they can interfere with the effects of psilocybin, and avoid using psilocybin after drinking alcohol or consuming other drugs or medications.
Engaging in activities that promote relaxation and self-care, such as yoga or nature walks, can also contribute to a positive mindset and overall well-being.
7. Connect with Nature
Nature has a profound healing and grounding effect. Spending time in nature before and after your psilocybin experience can enhance your connection to the natural world and promote a sense of awe and wonder.
Consider taking walks in natural settings, meditating outdoors, or simply sitting in a park to immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of nature.
8. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, without judgment. Cultivating mindfulness can help you navigate the psychedelic experience with greater awareness and acceptance.
Engage in regular mindfulness practices such as meditation, breathwork, or body scans. These practices can help you develop a greater sense of self-awareness and enhance your ability to stay grounded during the psilocybin journey.
9. Build a Supportive Network
Having a supportive network of friends or like-minded individuals who understand and respect your decision to explore psilocybin can be invaluable. Connect with others who have had positive experiences with psychedelics and share your intentions and concerns.
Engaging in open and honest conversations about psychedelics can provide you with different perspectives and insights, creating a sense of community and support.
10. Trust the Process
Lastly, trust the process. Remember that a psilocybin experience can be transformative and deeply personal. Trust yourself, the substance, and the journey itself.
Approach the experience with an open mind and surrender to whatever arises. Embrace the unknown and allow yourself to be guided by the wisdom of the psilocybin experience, and know that sometimes the effects are not immediate, and it might take a day or more after using psilocybin before you see the positive effects of its use.
Summary
Preparing for a psilocybin experience is a vital step in ensuring a safe and meaningful journey. By educating yourself, setting the right intentions, choosing the appropriate dose, and cultivating a supportive environment, you can enhance the potential benefits of a psilocybin experience.
Remember to approach the experience with respect, an open mind, and a willingness to embrace whatever unfolds. With proper preparation and guidance, a psilocybin experience can offer profound insights, personal growth, and transformative experiences.
Top 10 Ways to Return From a Bad Trip
Okay, so you decided to jump into mushrooms instead of dipping your toes in, or maybe you just happen to be sensitive to the effect of mushrooms, now what?
Psilocybin can provide profound and positive transformative experiences. However, sometimes things don't go as planned, and a psychedelic journey can take a turn for the worse, becoming challenging or overwhelming. In such cases, having a plan and knowing how to navigate through a difficult experience can be invaluable. It is best to be prepared for a bad trip each time you take psilocybin, just in case. Once you are already on a bad trip, you may find it difficult to process what you need or what you can do.
If you find yourself in the midst of a bad trip after taking too much psilocybin, fear not! In the tips below, we will explore techniques to help alleviate the negative effects and bring yourself back to a more positive state of mind. These tips can help you take the edge off a bad or intense reaction and guide you towards a more positive and manageable experience.
Note: If you aren't in any immediate danger, the recommendation is actually to just try to ride out the trip using the tips below rather than using a "trip killer" to try to stop the trip altogether.
1. Incorporate Sugar and Other Ingredients from the Kitchen
Believe it or not, certain ingredients from your kitchen can potentially help to mitigate the effects of a bad trip. Sugar, for example, can help to counteract the intensity of psilocybin. You can try consuming a small amount of sugar by eating a piece of fruit, a spoonful of honey, or drinking a glass of fruit juice. Additionally, some individuals find that consuming black pepper or chewing on peppercorns can help to provide relief from anxiety and paranoia.
Avoid anything with lemons, as lemons contain acetic acid, which can actually intensify the effects.
2. Take a Shower
A refreshing shower can do wonders for resetting your mindset during a bad trip. The sensation of water on your skin can be incredibly grounding and soothing. Allow the water to wash away any negative energy and visualize it carrying away your worries and fears. As you shower, focus on the sensation of the water and the sound it makes, bringing your attention to the present moment and helping to alleviate anxiety.
3. Practice Self-Compassion and Acceptance
During a bad trip, it's important to practice self-compassion and acceptance. Remind yourself that it's okay to feel scared or overwhelmed, and that these feelings are temporary. Remember that difficult experiences can provide valuable insights and growth opportunities. Treat yourself with love and understanding, and remind yourself that this too shall pass.
4. Surrender to the Experience
During a difficult trip, it is essential to surrender and let go of any resistance. Avoid resisting or fighting against the experience, as this can intensify negative emotions and make the situation more challenging. Instead, try to embrace the journey, surrendering to the present moment, knowing it will eventually come to an end. Trust that the trip will eventually come to an end, and that you have the inner strength to navigate through it.
5. Use Guided Imagery, Visualization, or Grounding Techniques
Guided imagery or visualization techniques can help to redirect your thoughts and create a more positive mental state. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a peaceful and serene setting, such as a beautiful beach or a tranquil forest. Engage all your senses and immerse yourself in the details of this imagined environment. Visualize yourself feeling calm, safe, and at ease. This practice can help to shift your focus away from negative thoughts and emotions, bringing about a sense of relaxation and tranquility.
Grounding techniques can help anchor you in the present moment and alleviate anxiety or panic during a psilocybin trip. Some effective grounding techniques include focusing on your senses, such as feeling the texture of an object, listening to soothing sounds, or smelling pleasant aromas.
6. Seek Support From a Trusted Friend
If you are struggling during a psilocybin trip, reach out to a trusted friend or trip sitter for support. That is what your "Buddy System" is for. When you are feeling overwhelmed, having someone who can provide reassurance, guidance, and a sense of safety can make a world of difference.
Share your experience with them and let them know how you're feeling. Sometimes, simply talking about your thoughts and emotions can help to alleviate their intensity. Your friend can offer guidance, perspective, and a comforting presence to help you navigate through the challenging aspects of the trip with more ease.
7. Seek Professional Help if Needed
If you find that you're unable to manage the effects of a bad trip on your own, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Reach out to a therapist or a healthcare professional who is experienced in psychedelic-assisted therapy. They can provide guidance, support, and tools to help you navigate through the challenging aspects of the trip. Remember, there is no shame in asking for help when you need it.
If things deteriorate to the point where medical intervention is necessary, do not be afraid to call 9-1-1, and be honest with any first responders and doctors about what you took. It is better to deal with the consequences with them than to risk serious injury or even death.
8. Change Your Environment
If you find yourself in an uncomfortable or overwhelming environment, consider changing your surroundings. Sometimes a simple change of scenery can have a profound impact on your state of mind. Step outside and immerse yourself in nature, take a walk in a quiet park, or simply sit under the open sky. Connecting with the natural world can offer a sense of grounding and perspective, helping to shift your focus away from the negative aspects of the trip. Moving to a different room or even just adjusting the lighting can have a significant impact on your mood and overall experience.
9. Deep Breathing and Meditation
Practicing deep breathing exercises and meditation can help calm the mind and body during a challenging psilocybin experience. Deep breathing and meditation techniques can be incredibly helpful in grounding yourself during a bad trip. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and focus on your breath, allowing it to anchor you in the present moment. Take slow, deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Allow your mind to become still and observe any thoughts or sensations without judgment. This practice can help to reduce anxiety and bring a sense of peace and clarity.
10. Shift Your Focus or Use Distractions
Redirecting your attention can be an effective way to manage a difficult psilocybin experience. Engage in activities that capture your interest, such as listening to calming music, watching visually pleasing videos, or exploring art. Shifting your focus can help distract from negative thoughts and emotions.
If you find yourself caught in a negative thought loop or experiencing intense emotions, using distractions can be helpful. Engaging in activities that require your attention can redirect your focus away from the negative aspects of the trip. Choose activities that you find enjoyable and immersive, such as listening to uplifting music, drawing or painting, solving a puzzle, reading an interesting book, watching a light-hearted movie, or engaging in a creative hobby. By shifting your attention to something positive and engaging, you can help to change the trajectory of your experience.
Summary
While a challenging psilocybin trip can be unsettling, following these tips can help you navigate through the experience with more ease and minimize the negative impact. Remember, every trip is unique, and difficult moments can often lead to profound personal growth and transformation. By approaching these experiences with respect, preparation, and a willingness to surrender, you can turn a challenging trip into a valuable opportunity for self-discovery and healing.
After the challenging psilocybin experience has passed, take time for integration and reflection. Journaling about your experience, discussing it with a trusted confidant, or seeking professional guidance can help you make sense of the insights gained and further integrate them into your life.
